Crypto Funds Lose Steam as Charts Hold the Line

Douglas WrightDouglas Wright—August 17, 2026

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP are still inching higher, but the move looks fragile rather than decisive. Recent ETF flow data shows Bitcoin and Ethereum giving back capital while XRP continues to attract fresh inflows, creating a split market picture that favours caution over chase.

Flows Turn Mixed Across the Three Tokens

Bitcoin spot ETFs posted about $390 million in outflows over the latest weekly stretch, which is a clear pullback from the recent pace of accumulation. Even so, the broader structure remains positive, with cumulative net inflows still at $51.79 billion and total net assets around $76.61 billion.

Ethereum also lost momentum. Its spot ETFs recorded roughly $2.26 million in outflows, ending a five-week run of inflows. That is a small amount in absolute terms, but it signals that buyers are no longer pressing as aggressively as they were earlier in the month.

XRP went the other way. Its spot ETFs brought in about $2.25 million, extending a five-week streak of inflows and standing out as the only one of the three still drawing net demand. That contrast matters because it shows selective appetite rather than broad-based risk taking.

Asset Latest ETF Flow Longer-Term Position
Bitcoin -$390 million $51.79 billion cumulative inflows; $76.61 billion in assets
Ethereum -$2.26 million $11.45 billion cumulative inflows; $10.52 billion in assets
XRP +$2.25 million About $1.51 billion cumulative inflows; $933 million in assets

Bitcoin Still Faces Heavy Overhead Supply

Bitcoin is trading near $63,416, and the technical setup remains strained while price sits below its key moving averages. The 50-day EMA is near $64,317, the 100-day EMA is around $66,393, and the 200-day EMA sits much higher at $72,390, leaving spot price boxed in beneath layered resistance.

Momentum is not helping much. The RSI near 46 points to a slightly weak daily trend, while the MACD remains below zero, which suggests the latest bounce has not yet turned into a strong recovery. A daily close above the $64,317 to $64,850 zone would be the first real sign that sellers are losing control.

Support is still intact, but only barely. The first major floor sits near the SuperTrend line at $61,291, and a break below that level could invite a deeper slide over the next few sessions.

Exchange data adds to the cautious tone. Santiment reported a jump in Bitcoin balances on exchanges to 18,000 BTC from 4,200 BTC the week before, a move that often implies more supply is ready to hit the market. That does not guarantee selling, but it does weaken the case for strong accumulation.

Ethereum Is Stable, Yet Not Fully Repaired

Ethereum is trading near $1,894 and looks better balanced than Bitcoin, though it has not fully repaired the recent damage. Price remains above the 50-day EMA at $1,868 and the SuperTrend support near $1,769, but it is still capped by the 100-day EMA at $1,918 and well below the 200-day EMA at $2,108.

The message is straightforward: ETH has steadied, but it has not regained its broader trend. An RSI near 53 leaves room for further upside, yet the negative MACD warns that the rebound still lacks conviction. A daily close above $1,918 would improve the outlook and put $2,108 back on the table as the next major target.

Failure to hold $1,868 would weaken the current setup quickly. If that level gives way, the SuperTrend line near $1,769 becomes the next area to watch, and losing it would drag Ethereum back into a wider bearish pattern.

XRP Holds Parity, But Needs a Cleaner Break

XRP is trading at roughly $1.00, and that level is doing most of the work. The token remains below its 50-day EMA at $1.08, its 100-day EMA at $1.16, and its 200-day EMA at $1.35, so the broader chart still favours sellers despite the steady ETF inflow pattern.

Momentum is weak. The RSI near 37 sits in bearish territory, and the MACD remains negative, which supports the view that downside pressure has not fully cleared. The near-term trigger for bulls is a clean move above $1.01, which would open the door toward the SuperTrend area around $1.07 and then the 50-day EMA at $1.08.

If XRP cannot reclaim $1.01, the market stays vulnerable to another test of parity. That makes the one-dollar level less of a milestone and more of a pressure point until price proves otherwise.

What Traders Should Watch Next

The bigger picture is mixed rather than bearish across the board. Bitcoin is still the most structurally important asset, but rising exchange balances and weak momentum argue for patience. Ethereum looks healthier, yet it needs a decisive close above short-term resistance before the market can call it a recovery. XRP remains the most technically pressured of the group, even though its ETF flows are the strongest.

For now, the market is behaving like a pause after a rally attempt, not a clean reversal. ETF demand is still present in places, but the latest flows suggest conviction is thinner than it was earlier in the summer.
